Dekalb Arts Academy Afterschool Care
Afterschool pickup where only staff can release a child
For Dekalb Arts Academy Afterschool Care, JAB built roll call, a pickup kiosk, parent pickup links and a teacher phone. It went live only after all 32 of its safety checks passed.
- 32
- automated safety checks, all passing
- 30 sec
- the pickup test agreed before building
- 4
- ways for staff to sign in
- The work
- Afternoon pickup is the most important handoff of the day. Staff need to know who is here, who is authorised, and which child to bring out, without shouting across a room or a walkie-talkie.
- What JAB did
- JAB built staff roll call by grade, a pickup kiosk, parent pickup links and a teacher phone screen that replaces the walkie-talkie.
- What is true now
- Live since August 4, 2026, with 32 automated safety checks behind every release.
The rule we built around
Before any code, we agreed what done looks like in one sentence anyone could test: a parent taps the link in their text and their child is called for pickup within 30 seconds.
The second rule mattered more. A parent's scan or PIN only creates a request. It never releases a child. A staff member releases, and at that moment the system checks again who is authorized and whether anything has changed today.
What we built
Arrival is a staff roll call by grade, so absent is a clear state, different from not yet marked. The kiosk handles pickup only. Parents get their own pickup link by text. Teachers get a phone screen and a text when a child is called, which replaced the walkie-talkie.
Corrections are added on top and never erase what happened, so the day's record is always complete. Staff can sign in with a password, with Google, or with a texted link that can approve a sign-in on another computer.
The real thing
- The adult is authorized for this child
- No restriction applies today
- A staff member makes the release
- The release is recorded and kept
