Welcome to AI Builders

Dear families,

Thank you for signing your student up for AI Builders. Over six weeks, your student will work on a small software team to plan an app, build it with an AI tool, test it, fix it, and present it to you on the last day. I want you to know exactly what that involves before the first class, so this packet covers what we do, what tools we use, and what happens to your student's work.

What your student will actually do

The AI does not do the thinking here. Students have to decide what to build and describe it precisely, because a vague instruction gets a poor result. They test their work honestly, including letting another team try to break it. And they stand up and explain their choices. Those are the skills that matter whether or not your student ever writes code for a living.

Week 1Form a team, choose a project, write a one-page plan on paper
Week 2Direct the AI to build the first version from that plan
Week 3Test another team's app and report what goes wrong
Week 4Fix the most important problems and add one feature
Week 5Prepare and rehearse a two-minute presentation
Week 6Showcase for families: live demos, questions, then you try the apps

The make-up week on the PARKS calendar is for catching up a missed class, or for the showcase if a class is cancelled for weather. No coding experience is needed. Students who already code are given harder tasks so they stay challenged.

What to bring

A charged laptop or Chromebook if your student has one. If not, we have loaners, so no one is turned away. Nothing is installed; everything runs in a web browser.

Keeping students safe

  • Students never create accounts with AI companies. They sign in with a team code we provide.
  • Students never type their names, addresses, phone numbers, photos, or passwords into the tool. We say this out loud on day one and print it on their workbook.
  • Every project is chosen from a list built for this age group. Screens face the room, and the instructor can see every team's work live from the instructor screen.
  • All instructors complete Cobb County PARKS background screening.

Please return

The media release on page 3, signed, by the first class. Page 2 explains the tools and data in plain terms. If you have a question at any point, call or email me directly. I would much rather answer it before the first class than after.

Tools and data

Exactly what your student uses, and what happens to their work.

The one tool students use

AI Builders Studio, a website run by Jordan & Borden for this class. Students type instructions such as “add a scoreboard that counts to ten.” The Studio passes the instruction to an AI model, which writes the code for the app, and the app appears on screen for the team to test. Students do not use ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or any other AI app directly, and they do not need any personal account.

The AI behind it

The Studio uses Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, through Anthropic's business service. Jordan & Borden holds that account, not your student. Under Anthropic's business terms, the instructions sent to Claude are not used to train its models. The Studio adds its own rules for this class: it refuses requests for personal information and content that is not appropriate for students.

What we collect

CollectedPurpose
Your student's first nameTaking attendance and printing the completion certificate
Team name and team codeSigning in to the Studio
The instructions the team types and the app it buildsSo the team can pick up where it left off each week, and so the instructor can supervise

Registration and payment go through Cobb County PARKS. Jordan & Borden does not receive your contact details, your student's age, or payment information.

What we do not collect

  • No email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses, or birthdays from students
  • No student photos or voice recordings in the tool
  • No tracking or advertising cookies, and nothing is sold or shared for marketing

Who can see your student's work

The team, the instructor, and the assistant. Each team gets a view-only link to its finished app to share with family, which shows the team name only. Apps are not listed publicly or searchable.

How long we keep it

Team work is kept until 60 days after the showcase so students can show their app to family, then deleted. If you want your student's team work deleted sooner, email walterjordan@jordanborden.com and it will be done within a week.

Media release

Please return by the first class. Saying no has no effect on your student's place in the class.

Jordan & Borden may take photos and short videos during AI Builders, mostly of students working in teams and presenting at the showcase. We use them to show what the class does, on the Jordan & Borden website and social media and in Cobb County PARKS program materials. We never publish a student's last name, school, or any contact information. A student without a signed release is kept out of every photo and video.

The form asks you to check one or more

  • Photos and video of my student may be used as described above.
  • My student's first name may appear alongside their photo or their team's app.
  • My student's app and team name may be shown as an example of student work.
  • No. Please keep my student out of all photos and videos.

You can withdraw this permission at any time by emailing walterjordan@jordanborden.com. We will stop any new use and remove your student from anything we control within a week.

To sign it

Print page 3 of the packet PDF, fill in your student's first name, the section day and time, and your name, phone or email, and signature, then hand it to the instructor at the first class.

Questions about any of this are welcome

Booking a one-day workshop for a school or camp?

The one-day session uses its own packet, written for school and camp staff to hand to families. See the student workshops page for how that session runs.
