The 7 Things a Customer Checks Before They Call You
A new customer decides in about 30 seconds whether you look worth the call. Here is exactly what they check, in the order they check it.
When someone finds your business online, they run a fast, mostly subconscious checklist before they pick up the phone. If you fail any single item, a lot of them quietly move on to the next result. The frustrating part is that these are all fixable, and most owners never see them because they already know the business is good.
Here is the checklist a new customer actually runs, and what it takes to pass each one.
1. Does the website even load, and is it secure?
If your site is slow or shows a Not Secure warning, a chunk of people leave before they read a word. Speed and a valid SSL certificate are table stakes now, and they are the first thing a browser judges you on.
2. Does it work on a phone?
Most local searches happen on a phone. If your site is not built to fit a small screen, the text is tiny, the buttons are hard to tap, and it reads as dated. That alone costs calls.
3. Can they tell what you do in five seconds?
People scan, they do not read. If your homepage does not say plainly what you do and where you serve, they will not work to figure it out.
4. Are there reviews, and are they recent?
Reviews are the modern word of mouth. A handful of old reviews reads as risky. A steady stream of recent ones reads as safe. Most people check your Google rating and review count before they ever call.
5. Is there an obvious way to reach you?
A visible phone number, a contact form, or a chat. If a visitor has to hunt for how to reach you, many will not bother.
6. Can they book without calling?
A growing number of customers, especially younger ones, would rather book online at 9pm than call during business hours. No online booking means you lose the ones who will not phone.
7. If they do reach out, does anyone answer fast?
This is the big one. Most leads are lost in the first few minutes when no one replies. The business that answers first usually wins, and after hours that is almost never a human.
The good news
Every item on this list is fixable, and you can see where you stand in about 30 seconds. We built a free audit that checks your site the way a new customer would and tells you which of these you pass and which are costing you calls.
